Savonnerie. The distinguishing colors of black, dark navy, gold and ocher were commonly used in these elegant French Savonneries creating a very dramatic effect. The light center against the dark background creates an embossed appearance similar to the embossed paneled ceilings of 17th-and 18th-century France.The center is deigned with an elegant wreath surrounded with realistic fruit and leaves. The center itself has an elaborately woven border resembling the main border of the rug; both echo the architectural designs of the time. The dark background is filled with intertwining golden branches, grapes and grape leaves.
