Tapestry. After the passing of Louis XIV, the official, formal themes vanished to make way for more creative themes. Tapestry weaving became more romantic with beautiful and realistic landscapes designed by artists who painted the designs. Skillful weavers then used these as the patterns for their weaving. As seen in this masterpiece, tapestries became painting-like in appearance by combining fine weaving with the use of thousands of colors. The border designs were chosen very carefully to properly complement the background subject. As seen in this great example, the garland-like border softly runs into the landscape at the bottom center of this peaceful scenery.
